Dear CultureTalkers,

Please find this request for existing research or projects/programs in the
Pacific in the area of intangible cultural heritage and tourism.

I will ask Ms. Hilary du Cros to make the findings available to us so that
it will be a useful exercise for the region as well.
Please respond directly to Hilary du Cros.

Dear Ms Huffer,

I’m currently doing a research project for the United Nations World Tourism
Organisation on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) and tourism and the
question has been raised regarding what is going on regarding safeguarding
ICH and/or developing it for tourism in these places?

I was wondering if you could point me to any research you know of OR
examples of a really good project/program in the Pacific Islands
incorporating some of the following:

(a) oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the
intangible cultural heritage;

(b) performing arts;

(c) social practices, rituals and festive events;

(d) knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe;

(e) traditional craftsmanship.

If you cannot help with this personally, can you please point me to someone
who can. Thanks for your help in advance!

All the best,

Hilary du Cros

Objet : RE: UNWTO project

Dear Ms Huffer,

An annual festival of some kind would be good. Our study is aiming to
feature successful stories of tourism development/products involving
different elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage in a report that will be
available through the UNWTO website to government members and National
Tourism Authorities. In order to consider some input as a potential case
study/best practice case, we would need to receive a short description that
should comprise 2-3 pages (for cases studies) or ½ -1 page (for best
practices) of text containing some of the following elements:

1. Project, program or event name (e.g. for festivals)

2.      Scale/Location

3. Date commenced - project started or event/facility started receiving
tourists

4.      Initiator/key stakeholders/nature of funding/partnerships and type
of collaborations - brief description

5. Type of tourism experience provided

6. Results - for instance: goals reached (e.g. economic benefits for
local community/sustainability of project after seed funding consumed),
tourist numbers, type of markets, marketing successes, management impacts,
future plans

7. Lessons to be learned - for instance: challenges, risks,
opportunities, problems, special issues e.g. under-use or over-use,
copyright protection or special government policies or partnerships needed
for certain projects to succeed

It would be great if you could send off a notice to the talk list about the
above with the deadline for submission of inputs being 1 March. They can
email them to me directly at this address. Please let me know if you have
any further queries.

Best wishes,

Hilary
