Subject: [Culturetalk] SAMOAN YOUTH VOYAGING - VOICES UNESCO in the
Asia-Pacific issue number 28, October-December 2011, published
Message-ID: <20AB1EE3C64B504E8A5B8BDC35FAAD34021273B7@MAILSERVER-01.hq.int.unesco.org>
Dear colleagues,
It is my pleasure to announce the new issue 28 of the VOICES UNESCO in
the Asia-Pacific newsletter: 'Radio drama gives hope: life-saving advice
to millions of flood victims'.
The cover story 'Radio drama gives hope: life-saving advice to millions
of flood victims' reports on how in March 2011 for the first time in
Pakistan's history, UNESCO's radio drama series Umeed e Sehr (Dawn of
Hope) was broadcast to millions of flood-affected people over the
national airwaves.
Other stories concern: New community strategies in Heritage conservation
in Asia-Pacific; The financial crisis exposing funding weakness in
higher education in the region; Arming the Afghan Police with literacy;
Revitalizing urban historic districts in India; Research on Lord
Buddha's birth date at the Lumbini World Heritage Site; Samoan Youth
voyaging on re-built traditional boats; High-tech approach to heritage
preservation in Uzbekistan; and Teaching Happiness, Bhutan's 'wellbeing'
concept as part of school curriculum.
Hard copies will be dispatched asap and the e-version is available in
the UNESCO Bangkok e-library at:
http://www.unescobkk.org/resources/e-library/newsletters/voices/
The newsletter can be downloaded from UNESDOC at:
http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0021/002148/214821E.pdf
As you may know, this is the last print issue of the VOICES newsletter.
The new regional e-newsletter is being finalized and its first issue
will be sent out mid January.
Once again, I would like to thank all authors, co-authors, and
photographers of the current and previous issues of the Voices
newsletter.
With best wishes for a Happy New Year,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
from the Hawai'i Conservation Alliance
This has been an exciting year for HCA, and we're looking forward to another great year in 2012! Here's a sneak peek at what's ahead in 2012:
20 Years of Conservation Partnerships! 2012 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the Hawai'i Conservation Conference . We are actively seeking proposals for the HCC, themed "What Difference Does 20 Years Make? Reflections on Change, Innovation, and the Work that Remains". Session proposals are due January 31st, 2012; abstracts are due by March 9th, 2012. More details.
In addition to seeking proposals, we are looking for abstract committee members from outside of Hawai'i to come alongside our Hawai'i-based reviewers in determining the content for the 2012 HCC. If you are interested in diversifying the geographic representation of the review committee, please email Mariza Silva, at coordinator at hawaiiconservation.org
Remember the Pacific-Hawai'i Conservation Exchange Program? In 2011, HCA revitalized this program to target emerging conservation professionals throughout the pacific, now including applicants from Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia jurisdictions! This program has been renamed Pacific Exchange Emerging Professionals program . We have limited funding for 2012, but are looking for two applicants for whom we can sponsor a Pacific Exchange. Those with matching support and two-way exchanges will be ranked more highly. More details.
The HCA Foundation Board recently approved the Pacific Region Participation Incentive! The Foundation hopes to encourage Pacific Islanders deepen cross island collaboration and further integrate Pacific Island's conservation work at the HCC by waiving HCC registration fees for the first 25 Pacific Islander registrants on a first come, first served basis. Eligibility: Employees of nonprofit conservation related organizations with citizenship from and based in the Pacific Islands within Micronesia, Polynesia and Melanesia. Attendee must provide their own travel expenses and a support letter from their employer. For more information, please email Lihla Noori, at director at hawaiiconservation.org
Lecture series - now ONLINE! For those of you who who can't make it to ING Direct on the last Wednesday of the month, we will now be taping the lecture series and posting it online for all to share! Click here to view November's lecture .
Thank you for your support of HCA, and for all that you do for conservation!
On behalf of the entire Hawai'i Conservation Alliance, we wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season.

The Cerveira Biennial Foundation opened the application period "Artist
Residencies Competition 2012", which runs until April 15th 2012.
The project Artistic Residencies 2012 integrates the cultural action

Talofa lava and Greetings,
Hope all is well with you in your endeavours.
I'm emailing to kindly inform you of upcoming events held in Wellington New
Zealand from the 19th till 23rd February 2012:
*?Culture for Sale; a Post-colonial V?lkerschau? a lecture by Shigeyuki
Kihara | 19 February 2012*
In August 2011 performance artist Shigeyuki Kihara travelled to Germany
with the support of the Visitor's program from the Goethe-Institut to
investigate museum archives held across Germany to research materials
related to the German administration of Samoa from 1900 till 1914.
Kihara?s presentation accompanied by a power point presentation traces the
historical footprints of several groups of Samoans including men, women and
small children who travelled and toured extensively across cities in
Germany including Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne where they
were exhibited in a zoo - a practise commonly known as ?V?lkerschau? a
popular form of exotic entertainment and colonial theatre at the time.
The title of the presentation ?Culture for Sale? is the same title of a
live public performance and multimedia installation conceived by Kihara
staged during the Sydney Festival in January 2012. Conceptually informed by
the Samoan participation in the ?V?lkerschauen?, ?Culture for Sale?
explores the close relationship between performance, identity, power and
money.
The presentation will discuss how Samoan identity as ?the other? was
contextualised under German colonialism, and whether the surrounding ideas
of ?the other? continues to resonate in the daily lives of Samoan people in
the so called ?post-colonial? era in the wake of the 50th Anniversary of
the Independence of Samoa in June 2012.
Here are the details to the upcoming lecture:
