GOMA Conference a Success

Many of the over 120 participants from more than 40 countries at the International Conference of the GOMA Project, "Let the Good Products Flow!", expressed their enthusiasm about the topics discussed at conference and hope that the work on harmonization and equivalence in organic agriculture will continue to lower barriers to trade. The conference, held on February 13-14, 2012 at the Nuremberg Conference Center, featured keynote speeches addressed from Harsha V. Singh, Deputy Director-General of WTO; Kathleen Merrigan, Deputy Secretary of Agriculture United States; and Franz Fischler, former Agriculture Commissioner of the European Union. Representatives of initiatives for regional harmonization of organic standards shared their experiences from Asia, the Pacific Islands, East Africa, and Central America; and the heads of the organic programs of the USDA, Canada Food Inspection Agency, and European Commission presented their perspectives on facilitating trade under their systems. Regional cooperation and harmonization was observed as a trend whereby intra-regional trade is fostered, regional learning takes place, and the region's position is strengthened, with respect to major trading partners elsewhere around the globe. Multilateral approaches to equivalence were encouraged, centered on common objectives and tools for facilitating this approach. The conference documents and the presentation slides of speakers are available HERE <http://www.goma-organic.org/conference/download-documents/> .

Cooperatives Contribute to Food Security and Poverty Reduction

On March 1, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released 'Good Practices in Building Innovative Rural Institutions to Increase Food Security', a publication with a series of case studies that highlight the crucial role of producer groups and cooperatives in fighting hunger and poverty.
The report describes 35 cases of successful institutional innovations, that can support small-scale producers by providing access to, and management of, natural resources, inputs like seeds and equipment, access to markets, and improved information and communication.
Among the innovations we find the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS), farmer field schools and local lending associations, but to name a few. The report also stresses how women have benefited from rural organizations through access to markets, information, extension and natural resources.

Support Biodiversity and Bio-Cultural Heritage - Endorse the Seed Declaration!

During the Seed Festival, that took place in Mumbai-Pune, February 19-21, 2012 people came together to celebrate the rich diversity of the Indian seed and bio-cultural heritage. The program of the conference included exhibitions, meetings with seed savers, the screening of documentary movies, music and discussions over seed diversity conservation and promotion, urban agriculture, as well as tradition and culture. One outcome of the event was the drafting of a Seed Declaration, with which the petitioners stand up for the sovereign rights of farming communities and indigenous people over their collective bio-cultural heritage, against any private or corporate proprietary claim of ownership over any variety of seed, crop, plant or life form and against genetically engineered seeds and species. The declaration also urges the Indian government to partner up with the farmers and civil society organizations, in order to jointly protect the country's rich biodiversity, as well as the health of croplands and ecosystem, by pro-actively promoting and supporting bio-diverse and holistic ecological agriculture practices.
Help the petitioners reach their goal by signing the declaration <http://www.change.org/petitions/the-people-and-the-government-of-india-safeguard-agro-biodiversity-for-health-of-people-and-agro-ecosystems-3> !

EU and USA Agree on Organic Equivalence

European Commissioner Dacian Ciolos for the European Union's (EU) Agriculture and Rural Development and Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan of the US Department of Agriculture have announced the signing of an organic equivalence arrangement between the world's two largest markets for organic food at BioFach Germany last February. The EU and USA will join forces to promote organic programs, protect organic standards, enhance cooperation and facilitate trade in organic products. This will expand market access for organic producers and companies (provided they meet the terms of the new arrangement) by reducing duplicative requirements and certification costs.

Monsanto Wins Dismissal of Small-Farmers Class-Action Lawsuit

Small independent farmers tried to set up a class-action lawsuit against the GMO-giant Monsanto, challenging the company's patents on genetically modified seed, stating they are no longer able to keep transgenic contamination out of their fields. Their goal: putting in place a "laws of nature" based preliminary injection that would prohibit Monsanto from suing small farmers for seed contamination, since chances of cross-pollination are very high. But the judge Naomi Reice Buchwald dismissed the lawsuit, claiming that none of the farmers behind the action had been personally threatened by the multinational and that only 13 cases of patent enforcement had been registered last year, over a total of 2 million US farmers. Out of these, only 13.000 are organic. Dan Ravicher, executive director of the Public Patent Foundation and lead lawyer for the plaintiffs is considering now whether to appeal the dismissal, on behalf of the farmers.
