Nadi, Fiji - Over forty (40) country officials and experts from the human, animal and environmental health sectors will gather in Denarau, Fiji, on Friday 13 April 2018, for the One Health Consultative Workshop organised by the Pacific Community (SPC) in collaboration with partners of the Pacific Public Health Surveillance Network (PPHSN).
This workshop, which brings together multi-sectoral country officials and experts, seeks to support the creation of a One Health coordination mechanism at regional level for integrated efforts against zoonotic diseases (diseases spread from animals to people) like leptospirosis and climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases like dengue fever.
Four parallel workshops will take place throughout the day on prioritizing zoonotic diseases of national concern for Pacific Island countries and territories, identification of research priorities, identification of vector control capacities and planned activities for 2018-2020.
Participants are from Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Vanuatu and Wallis and Futuna. Experts from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Fiji National University (FNU), the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the Institute Pasteur of New Caledonia (IPNC), the Pacific Island Health Officers Association (PIHOA), SPC, the Universities of Queensland and Sydney and the World Health Organization (WHO), will also attend and contribute to the discussions.
